11th October 2013: Welcome Aboard

Over the past several days members of the JC904 science team have been arriving in the city of Santa Cruz on Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands. Santa Cruz was the ship’s last port of call before heading out to sea for our 48-day cruise. We had beautiful weather for our departure and some of the group gathered on deck to wave goodbye to terra firma.

For many of us who couldn’t be in Southampton to help prepare the ship’s labs, this was the first time we’d seen the ship and met our fellow scientists. There will be 19 science staff members on the boat, ranging in experience from graduate students to seasoned investigators (meet us here) and each of us is eager to apply our expertise to help make the cruise’s goals a reality.

We’re now underway, heading southward into the open ocean. The peak of Tenerife’s volcano is still visible through the main lab portal but it won’t be long before the only topography we’ll be able to see is that which we find underwater. We couldn’t be more excited!

Bon Voyage
